Go on an adventure!
What is your history with food?
I was reminded recently by my Mum that I was a complete pain as a child because I was fearful of pretty much everything. This included the rain, my school, most dogs, other people's houses and FOOD - with the exception of mashed potatoes and peas.
Food back in the 1960’s was pretty rubbish so I think I must have been a discerning kid.
When I reached my late teens, my job as an au pair in France and training at The Cordon Bleu Cookery School, led to a more mature palate and a passion for decent grub.
As a nurse in London in the 80’s I ate badly and lived off sliced bread, ‘cup a soups’ and chips nicked off the ward, so it was really only after my daughter Sophie was born that I began to enjoy cooking again. I wanted to give her home cooked healthy meals, and I have to say she ate everything that was recommended by Annabel Karmel - does anyone else remember that recipe book from the 90’?
So back to the point of this blog!
Stepping out of a food comfort zone - and we all have them - even just a tiny bit, can be really worth it - not only to zing up your taste buds but to help you flourish in health too.
But can be tricky if you are not sure what the hell to do with some of the fruit, veg or spices you might see in your local supermarket or health food shop.
So the challenge this week is to be adventurous and try some new foods - which might be a small or giant leap depending on availability, budget and your time.
Maybe try some tangy greek yoghurt instead of muller light, fresh chilli, raw ginger and zingy lime instead of a stir fry sauce, or chickpeas instead of meat.
Maybe you will have a go at using freekah instead of tofu, tempeh instead of chicken and spices like sumac and ras el hanout instead of oregano.
The good news is there will be lots of recipes, tips and videos to inspire you, so enjoy the challenge and go on a food adventure in Aldi this week!
Roasted fennel with peas anyone?
